Death Investigation for First Responders

Whether it’s a murder, suicide, natural death or an accidental one, first responders must be well trained to handle the challenges presented by any death investigation.  In this course, we will arm you with the skills to ensure that you are prepared to conduct a thorough, unbiased death investigation.

We will teach you the duties and responsibilities of the first responder and the preliminary investigative procedures you will need to manage the case.  We will cover the most common causes of natural deaths and you will learn how to differentiate between various types of homicides including domestic altercations and drug-related, sex-related or contract-motivated murders.

We will show you how to recognize different types of injuries, such as firearm, sharp force, blunt force and asphyxiation and introduce you to crime scene reconstruction and bloodstain pattern recognition.  You will also learn how forensic entomologists, odontologists and anthropologists can aid in your investigation.
