Accident Investigation
Involving DNA Comparison
by Chris Wagoner
In this article, Mr. Wagoner describes how DNA samples collected from blood
spatters on the inside and outside of a crash vehicle can be matched with DNA
samples taken from the occupants in order to determine, with the aid of other
evidence, where each occupant was seated and who was driving at the moment of
impact.
- He uses an actual case for examination and explanation of the following
areas:
- Examining the crash vehicles for blood spatters and other evidence
- Comparing DNA samples to determine from which person each blood
spatter came
- Determining the expected movement of the occupants in a side-impact
collision
- Determining the seating arrangements of the occupants
- Evaluating a witness’ statement in light of evidence contrary to the
statement
- Proving who was driving
- Collecting DNA samples from blood spatters on the vehicles and occupants
