Gang Control That Works:
A Police Investigator's Perspective

Not a single state in the U.S. has escaped some type of violence committed by gangs. With over three quarter of a million members, gangs have infiltrated their way into many cities in every state in the nation.

To help reduce the number of gangs and their violent, often illegal, activities, Officer Freddie Rivera has written an article entitled Gang Control That Works: A Police Investigator's Perspective to serve as a possible model for use by cities and towns throughout the country that are looking for a realistic way to manage gang activities. 

After giving you a brief overview of gangs and violence across the nation, the author shifts his focus to the problem in Durham, North Carolina, where there is a high concentration of gang related activity and crime. To assess the underlying factors contributing to gang activity as well as to understand the community's perception of the gang problem, Officer Rivera conducted a survey in Durham to gather data on gangs. He provides you with the results of this survey in both narrative and chart form. He also offers explanations of several gang control programs that are currently working in other states. 

Officer Rivera is Major Crimes Unit Investigator with the Durham (North Carolina) Police Department. Prior to being assigned to this unit in 2002, he was a Gang Investigator with the additional responsibility of providing gang awareness training for not only the department, but also for Duke Hospital in Durham, the Durham County School System and several other public service organizations in the community.
