Detecting Deception:
Polygraph Instruments, Standards, Procedures - For the
Practitioner
by Theodore Ponticelli
We’ve come a long way since the days when donkeys and rice
were used to predict when a person was lying. And as man became more scientific,
so did the methods. In one of IPTM's latest manuals, Detecting Deception:
Polygraph Instruments, Standards, Procedures - For the Practitioner, you
will learn how a skilled polygraph examiner can determine whether or not a
person is telling the truth.
The author, Theodore Ponticelli, addresses the essential factors that are needed
for a proper polygraph examination and explains each in detail. He explains the
reasons why understanding physiology and the changes that occur in a person
during a test are crucial to accurate interpretation.
Mr. Ponticelli also describes the basic rules of test question formulation,
standard chart markings, different test formats and the interpretation and
analysis of each test. He offers advice on how the practitioner should act
before, during and after the test and how to confirm the results.
This book was written for entry-level polygraph examiners as well as more
accomplished practitioners who may need to consult such a work. It will also
serve as a comprehensive reference for the legal and law enforcement communities
who may need to understand the applied theory of detecting deception.
The book includes the following chapters:
- History of Detecting Deception
- Applied Theory of Detecting Deception
- Polygraph Instrumentation
- Physiology as Applied to Detecting Deception
- Normal and Abnormal Psychology (Abbreviated)
- Subjectivity-Objectivity
- Test-Question Formulation

- Polygraph Chart Interpretation and Analysis
