The Rights of Law Enforcement Officers
(5th Edition)
by Will Aitchison
The role of today’s officer is much more than law
enforcement and crime prevention. In the course of any given day, you may be
called upon to act as a social worker in a domestic dispute, act as a prosecutor
in traffic law cases, provide emergency medical treatment or dismantle a lab
used to manufacture drugs. In addition, you must keep abreast of current state
and federal laws, changing departmental procedures and increasing job
requirements.
While the majority of the public’s focus remains on the rights possessed by
criminals, the notion that law enforcement officers themselves have rights has
been lost. These rights, which are often misunderstood or applied sporadically,
are the subject of the extensively revised book, The Rights of Law
Enforcement Officers (5th Edition), published by The Labor Relations
Information System, available now from IPTM.
In this edition, you will find references to hundreds of new cases decided in
the last few years. Supporting case law and statutory citations make this an
excellent reference tool for both police departments and attorneys. Also
included with the book is a CD-Rom that contains the complete text of the book,
hundreds of court decisions and a dozen state peace officer Bill of Rights.
The book includes the following chapters:
- Law Enforcement Officers and Collective Bargaining
- Disciplinary Standards and Law Enforcement Officers
- Procedural Rights in the Disciplinary Process
- Law Enforcement Officer Bills of Rights
- The Right to Privacy and the Regulation of Off-Duty Conduct
- A Law Enforcement Officer’s Freedom of Speech Rights
- A Law Enforcement Officer’s Freedom of Association Rights
- The Right to Engage in Political Activities
- Religion and the Law Enforcement Workplace
- The Rights of Law Enforcement Officers to Bring Civil Lawsuits
- Worker’s Compensation and the Right to a Safe Working Environment
- Law Enforcement Officers and Employment Discrimination
- The Employment Rights of Disabled Officers
- The Fair Labor Standards Act
- The Enforcement of Officer’s Rights
