The Stalking Phenomenon

The Stalking Phenomenon: Preying on the Soul
by Dr. Reid Kimbrough

Stalkers come from all walks of life. There is no specific age, race or gender. A stalker can be a spouse, a friend, a child or a stranger and can come from any type of family in any neighborhood. The truth is, anyone can be a potential stalker. And unfortunately, the majority of stalking cases are not reported to the authorities until a serious crime has been committed.

In this book, Dr. Kimbrough explains why victims are reluctant to inform the police that they are being stalked. He presents case studies of real life stalking incidents to show you how stalking may progress from being merely a bothersome series of encounters and incidents to a life-threatening situation that can psychologically devastate the targeted individual or potentially end in murder.

Dr. Kimbrough gives you an overview of the various types of stalkers - from the erotic to the schizophrenic to the psychopathic - and describes the characteristics, traits and patterns of each. He offers ways to profile a stalker and includes a Tactical and Risk Assessment checklist that can be used to perform a lethal threat assessment of the stalker. He also devotes a chapter to the juvenile stalker and provides a list of warning signs that may be used to predict the destructive behavior of these children.

Dr. Kimbrough offers tips to train others on how to reduce the likelihood of ever becoming involved with a stalker as well as methods for coping with a stalking incident before it gets out of hand. In addition, he provides appendices of current stalking laws, statutes and criminal codes.

The book includes the following chapters:

  • What Is Stalking and Who Are Stalkers?
  • Major Categories of Stalkers
  • Cyberstalking
  • Traits and Characteristics of Violent Offenders and Stalkers
  • Subcategories of Stalkers
  • Juvenile Stalking Patterns
  • Case Files: Victims and Perpetrators
  • Progressing Toward a Violent End
  • Loners
  • What Can be Done to Thwart the Stalker?

Dr. Kimbrough’s career in law enforcement began during the 1980’s. In the aftermath of an unfortunate incident in which he narrowly escaped being killed in the line of duty, he completed a Master’s Degree in Psychology/Professional Counseling and a Doctorate in Behavioral Science with an emphasis in Psychology. He remains active in research and training in the law enforcement field and has worked with several police and sheriffs’ departments around the country focusing on school violence, juvenile homicide, stalking investigations and Officers at Risk/Internal Affairs investigations.
